Treasures

Yesterday Ken and I decided to take a drive to the Montsweag Flea Market on Route 1 between Bath and Wiscasset. It was a beautiful day to see the Maine coast, and the flea market is one of our favorite haunts each summer.

Yesterday I hit the jackpot at Montsweag with this Cathedral Window quilt. I felt my pulse quicken (I'm not kidding), when I spotted the quilt on top of a box full of linen napkins, doilies, table cloths, etc. I didn't expect to buy it, because I knew the vendor would say "$100" or "$200" at the very least when I asked the price. But he said "$25"!

A good flea market shopper never agrees to the first price asked for, however, so I said, while trying to contain my excitement without screaming, "Would you take $20?"

He shocked me again by saying, "Yes." I couldn't believe it. Someone's hard work, painstakingly piecing the entire thing by hand, was now my treasure. Isn't it a beauty?

I also bought a pure linen table-topper table cloth, with ecru embroidery on one corner, for $2, this Australian linen tea towel for $1, and a beautifully hand-crocheted doily for $1. All items are in excellent condition and will be well taken care of by their new owner.

After we left Montsweag, we continued on to Wiscasset for lunch. We sat in Sarah's restaurant, enjoying lobster rolls, while we watched the line form at Red's Eats. The wind was too brisk for us to stand in line for an hour to get a lobster roll there.

Stuffed from our lunch, we then continued up the coast to Boothbay Harbor, where we enjoyed a visit with my older sister, her daughter and son-in-law, and their two daughters. Robbie works at Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay, so of course we had to visit Hodgdon to see the latest yacht being built. It's scheduled for launching in August, and it's going to be a beauty. I was most intrigued by the mock-up of the entire cabin, each room carefully constructed to size from what appears to be styrofoam. A huge sign outside the mock-up says, simply, "Don't lean on anything blue." The entire mock-up is blue, of course, and the sign is there because one visitor, a lady, once attempted to sit down on a "bench" in one of Hodgdon's mock-ups, and of course the thing collapsed.

Our day was capped off with a stop at Dairy Queen in Bath for our annual Peanut Buster Parfait. It was a perfect day all 'round.

  5. Aunt Jean,

I read your blog , just have been a secret reader I guess you could say. when I saw this last post I had to drop a line. All is well in ny, getting ready for my daughter's school play where she is the tall alice in Alice In Wonderland. My oldest son plays Baseball and got picked to play on the team " Boston Red Sox " which is his team he loves in real life, but hard to be one in Yankee territory :-) I have a very smart active 2 yr old whom keeps me busy and on my toes. I still work at the police department and have been with them for almost 10 yrs now. We are coming to Maine July 31- Aug 5th to visit my mom.

  7. Aunt Jean:

It was great to see you guys!

I still chuckle at your bargaining on the quilt!! Robbie enjoyed showing you the boat. Hopefully you can make it up to the launching. Or at least see the finished product.

    Love, Marg

PS - Did Molly behave? Next time she'll need to come for a visit too!

  8. Hi Margaret,

It was really great to see you, Robbie, Robyn, and "Tiz." Ken and I felt the entire day was really special. I loved seeing the mockup and am amazed at the work that must go into that alone, never mind building an entire yacht! Molly was glad to see us when we got home. We were away most of the day on Sunday, too, so we've tried to spend a little more time with her since then, so she doesn't feel like a "latch key dog."

    Love, Aunt Jean

  9. Thank you, Musings, for my award. I appreciate that! Thank you for your kind words.

It's a beautiful morning here in Maine, although a tad on the cool side. I'm busily tending to my outdoor plants and must get back to them.
