Hearts

I think my 2017 Valentine hearts are done.

Unless I decide to make one or two or five more.

They are fun to make. It always takes me awhile to start them, though, because I have to reprogram myself to switch from knitting needles to small embroidery needles.

Once I've made the transition, I'm on fire with enthusiasm for the project.

I spend a year, from one January to the next, collecting heart ideas on Pinterest. I have a special folder labeled "Valentines," and into go photos of any hearts that look reasonable for recreating.

This was the winner this year, and I think it might be my prettiest yet.
I send one heart to the seven-or-eight-year-old daughter of a former student. I've been sending her a Valentine heart each year for about five years. She wouldn't know me if she met me on the street, but she's cute and I think she might enjoy getting a heart each year.

I'll send one to a friend in far southern Maine who sends me one of her photo calendars each Christmas. This is my way of thanking her.
I'll give one to my good friend, Lynn, just because. She has the biggest heart of anyone I know.

This year I'll send one to a niece who , I suspect, needs a boost of morale. She doesn't have an easy life.

I'll save one for myself, as a record of what my 2017 hearts looked like.

That leaves one spare heart, which will find a home somewhere, I'm sure.

Now it's time to get back to my knitting.

  1. Oh my goodness, is this ever a wonderful idea. Perhaps you could make more and give some to random people that look like they need something to brighten their day. I should make these to give to the little white haired ladies that block my path in the grocery store. I should make some to carry in my purse. Children would also enjoy these.

    1. This is a great idea! I'll be making more now, for sure. Then I'll plan to be out and about soon, to hand some out randomly. I should send one to Drumpf!

  4. These are very sweet and I like Linda's idea of handing them out to those who might need a little love.

  5. I love the hearts and I have some little friends here in FL who I think would be very happy to make up a bunch with me. Don't know that I have the generosity of spirit to give them to those grocery store aisle blocking folks though!

    1. Thank you, Olga. I'm thinking it might be more workable for me to make some of my salt dough or cold porcelain hearts and give those out. I can mass-produce them quite easily.

  6. I'm so glad I came here today. I've been reading a couple of posts and they are so from-the-heart. You certainly have amazing talent with needles! What you have produced, they're really lovely, but what's lovelier is that you're giving them out, spilling little bits of sunshine here and there. Some days, that's just what folks need.
