It's about those socks

There's a chance I've been overdoing it in the hand knit socks department.

Exhibit A: The new, never-been-worn socks stored in a dresser in the guest room. I see eight pairs of socks there.

I'm currently wearing one pair of hand knit socks.

There are six pairs of hand knit socks in my dresser drawer.

There might be a pair or two hand knit socks in the clothes hamper.

Hmmmm. That makes fifteen pairs of hand knit socks, minimum, all in my size, 7 1/2.

What do I have on my needles at the moment? Why, socks, of course! (Exhibit B, to the left)

This is a sock yarn I purchased in Victoria, BC, in September, and I've been eager to try it out. It's Opal, a German yarn, and it does knit up beautifully.

But I digress. What am I doing with all of these socks???

I like to have a sock project underway between other knitting projects, and also socks are the best project for travel knitting as far as I'm concerned.

But still, fifteen pairs of socks? And I wear them only fall-to-spring, not in the summer.

I'd guess I have enough unused pairs of new socks on hand to last me the rest of my life. After all, I turned 70 earlier this week.

On a more upbeat note, two of my orchid plants have sent up flower spikes! See them in the photo below? The spikes are held in place with pink butterfly clips.

I'm quite excited about this. If the orchids bloom in a few weeks, I should have orchid blossoms that last until spring. Stay tuned for photos of orchids in bloom1

  1. Christmas is coming up. I'm sure there are a lot of people on your gift list who would love to have hand knit socks for a present from Santa.

  2. I also have way too many pairs of hand knit socks but I can't bear to give them to people who will not treat them with the same kindness I do. I would love to knit socks for my daughter-in-law but I know she would put them in the washer/dryer plus she runs around the house in sock feet. Hurts me to think about it.

On another note. I took the shingles vaccine two years ago. This week I was diagnosed with shingles! It does appear to be a mild case so perhaps the shot helped but I am not a happy camper.

  3. Those socks are a treasure. If you don't have someone on your Christmas gift that would appreciate them, save them for the future. You never know. You might get tired of knitting later in life. I doubt. I can't see you ever not knitting.

Thanks for the photos of the orchids. I am so excited because my orchid, the first I've ever really had that I kept alive, also sent out two shoots. You are the perfect person to ask this question: Should I cut off the old shoot that had blossoms on it when I got the orchid? I know nothing about raising orchids.

  4. Yes, you should cut the old shoot back, leaving about 1 1/2" of it at the base. TWO shoots is extra exciting! Last year I accidentally broke off a shoot when trying to straighten it. I almost cried.
