Oops. I meant to say
It's time to dry the herbs.
My garden, in general, has been a disaster this year, thanks to rain and more rain throughout June and July. I've harvested a grand total of about five tomatoes and perhaps ten cucumbers.
Once August hit, the rain has become infrequent, and my pots of herbs, at least, are thriving.
I did a little googling on "how to dry herbs" and came up with
this.

So I've just picked bunches of fresh parsley and basil (Gosh, I LOVE the fragrance of fresh basil.) and followed the directions at About.com for drying them.
There's nothing like fresh basil in one's cooking, but since that's hard to find in Maine in mid-winter, dried will have to do.

The laundry room has a wall-mounted drying rack, so that's where the herbs are now hanging.

Let's hope I haven't packed the bundled herbs too fully.

Of course, if you're not into drying herbs, you can sit on the back deck and read
as you wait for the Sunday paper to be delivered by our haphazard delivery person who's supposed to see to it that the paper's in our newspaper box no later than 7:30 a.m. on Sundays but here it is 9:03 a.m. and the darned paper STILL isn't here.
Not that this upsets us, of course.
Sounds like you might need more than one cup of coffee if that darn paper doesn't arrive soon! Wow, what a process you have set up to dry the herbs. Pretty neat. And won't the herbs taste great next winter when you sit down to dinner and can't see out the windows due to the snowbanks!
ReplyDeleteOh, mercy. The mention of not seeing out the windows for the high snowbanks was a low blow, Cheryl. I wasn't quite ready to entertain that thought.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's 10:40 a.m. with still no Sunday paper.
Good luck with the herbs. I've been considering growing some of my own, but my thumb is not very green.
ReplyDeleteI complain like crazy when my paper isn't delivered when it is supposed to be. Normally, the newspaper wants to know when their deliverers aren't doing the job.
Hi Jo, I phone the newspaper office just about every time the paper isn't delivered on time. The poor girl who takes the complaints probably recognizes my voice at this point. I hate to constantly complain, but i figure if we're paying for a service, we deserve to get that service. And the Sunday paper is the best one of the week!
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm.... thanks for telling us how to dry the herbs. We have fresh basil and rosemary here all the time. The parsley is not doing very well though. My brother uses the basil to make pesto. Seeing your photos make me want to try drying them... but I guess I don't need to.
ReplyDeletefun i could almost smell the herbs drying. we gave up on gardening as it's too hot and sunny where we live and a virus got anything that grew. too much work for nothing...too bad cause my hubby loves to garden.
ReplyDeleteVery nice herb garden. You may have inspired me to dry some of my rosemary. I managed to get two large batches of pesto made/frozen from my basil, before they were complelely destroyed by earwigs (darn those earwigs!!). My rosemary, however, is wonderful. Next year I'd like to dedicate one raised bed to herbs only. You are right, there is nothing like fresh herbs.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like my Sunday paper carrier may have moved to Maine to become your paper carrier. We've given it two good tries (having the paper delieved) but after not getting the paper/getting the paper/getting it really late, we cut our losses and now buy it from the grocery each week. As a former paper carrier of many, many years, I found it particularly annyoying.
p.s. Hi Uncle Goobs!
