So that's that.

As we drove home from No. Carolina on Sunday and Monday, I kept mentioning the baby robins and how I couldn't wait to see them. I knew they were scheduled to hatch last weekend.

We got home last evening. The first thing I did when I got into the house was make a beeline for the dining room window so I could peer out at the baby birds being fed by their mother.

What I saw instead was the ficus tree knocked over. I ran outside to figure out what had happened, and there I found two of the baby birds, dead. The mother and the third bird were nowhere to be found, but several feathers littered the porch floor.

Ken says a predator got them, probably a fox or maybe a raccoon.

So that's that.

  1. Aaah, I am so sorry. I visited your site this morning and just knew I would see photos of the baby birdies......nature certainly has its disappointments, at times, doesn't it?

What did you think of the lovely state of North Carolina?

  2. Hi Susan,

Thank you for your nice note. I've been feeling so sad and disappointed about those baby birds and their devoted mother. This morning when I went out on the porch to water my flowers, I noticed a robin sitting on a branch overlooking the porch. I'm wondering if he's the father of the babies. He was keeping a close eye on me.

We loved North Carolina. I'll be posting about our time there, but I had to deal with the bird issue first so I could put it behind me!

  4. Oh how sad. I have been anxiously checking daily to see an update. Gosh the news was devastating, can only imagine how you must have felt to find it. Isn't it amazing how such little things can be so big to us?

  6. Aaawww darn... That's such a shame. It reminds me of the nest of baby rabbits we had outside our door in Illinois. My children who were very young at the time loved to see them growing each day. Then, one morning I had to shield them from the massacre I saw in our yard. A cat had come and.... it was sad. Nature can be cruel.
