Let's Hear It for Bakewell Biscuits

If you like freshly-baked biscuits, then you'll love Bakewell biscuits.

(First a disclaimer, however: I do not own the Bakewell Cream company, own stock in the company, work for the company, or know anyone who works for the company.) Bakewell Cream is made here in Maine, up the coast in Winterport, to be exact, by the New England Cupboard. Mainers have kept a can of Bakewell Cream in their cupboards since the 1940's.  If you click on this link, be prepared to spend some time at The Yankee Grocery site. Lots of good recipes, etc., there.

I simply like the biscuits that result from using Bakewell Cream and following the recipe for biscuits on the Bakewell can.

I just took a fresh batch of Bakewell biscuits from the oven and thought you might enjoy looking at them and seeing for yourself how light and fluffy they are. I've never known the recipe to fail. Trust me, they're tasty, too.

As you can see, I add a sinful little dab of butter to the top of each biscuit before popping them into the oven. The Bakewell recipe used to call for the dab of butter; now it leaves out that step, but I persist in adding the butter.

I repeat: If you like freshly-baked biscuits, then you'll love Bakewell biscuits.

  4. Thise look FANYASTIC!! I'm sold. I've never heard of Bakewell Cream. I'll have to check out the site and see if it can be ordered through them. I absolutely want to make some. My hubby will think I'm wonderful if I make up a pan of those.... that is, If I share them with him. They're looking good enough to want to hoard next to my stash of M&M peanuts. I'll share. They're best eaten hot, right?

  6. I prefer them hot, but Ken likes them hot or cold. It occurred to me after I wrote this post that I should have mentioned Bakewell Cream is a powder, like baking soda or cream of tartar, although it sounds like it might be a liquid. Yes, it can be ordered online.

  7. You got me hooked on Bakewell Cream biscuits years ago, Aunt Jean. I have a can in my cupboard, way out here in Idaho. I like mine warm, with butter and jam on them. Yum! We're having some friends over for dinner tonight and I was planning to make yeast rolls...maybe I should make some biscuits instead!

  9. Your pictures got me. I guess I'm hungry, but I followed your link and ordered a can and a recipe book. The shipping cost more than the order, but I'll let you know what I think when I get them. I haven't spent much time on the east coast (except in little time in Albany when my son's family lived there), so I don't know how the Bakewell Cream is different from my mother's baking powder biscuits.

    We'll see.

  10. Jo, I'm sorry to hear the shipping cost is high. So often I'll start to order something online, discover the shipping cost is astronomical, and decide not to order after all. I hope the Bakewell Cream lives up to your expectations, or to my claims. I think it will.

Heather, Glad you were inspired to bake some biscuits Saturday evening. Your chocolate cream pie looks award-winning.

  11. Aunt Jean - the following night, I took the leftover pork from my roast and diced it, then simmered it in some gravy. Took the leftover Bakewell biscuits, sliced them in half, toasted and buttered them, and served the pork/gravy mixture over the top. De-lish!
