I just wrote an account of yesterday at the Great Barrier Reef, then I accidentally deleted it. Shoot. To recap, it was incredible. We went by catamaran to a nearby island first, Green Island, which is about 1/2 hour from Cairns. Then we spent another hour getting to the outer reef. The snorkeling was spectacular, and I saw fish of every shape, color, and size imaginable, tons of 'em, and coral reef and other underwater life that I'd like to have studied for hours.
Pretend you can see Ken and me in this flock of snorkelers. Obviously I, for one, am not there, though, if I took this picture.
Last night we went to the aboriginal cultural center for a show and a huge buffet. We've finally heard a didgeridoo being played, and it's a sound like no other. Ken said it seems to be the aboriginis' answer to the bagpipes, and he's got a point. The instruments is made from a hollowed-out branch of a gum tree, or section of branch, hollowed out by ants. The player blows into one end and creates these mournful sounds.
Today we're taking a train up into the mountains to a village, then we're taking the cable car back down.
This is another rushed post. Ken's waiting for me in our room so we can go to breakfast....
I picked you two out immediately :)
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great experience you had. Did you have an underwater camera by any chance?
