It's snowing, finally, here in Maine today, so I whipped up a fresh batch of suet cakes for my feathered friends. They do love these cakes, and they especially love them once there is snow on the ground covering their usual dining selections
Here's the recipe:
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup vegetable shortening, melted beef suet or bacon drippings
4 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup white flour
I never measure the ingredients; I just toss in some of this and some of that. I always use beef suet, a big glob of it from the butcher shop. I also toss in a little sugar or honey and some rolled oats.
Perhaps I could do this. We don't have a good place to feed birds. It's hard to feed birds here because it's almost impossible to keep the seed dry. If it gets wet it becomes moldy and you have a real mess to deal with.
ReplyDeleteHI Jean...almost sounds good enough to eat myself ...well that beef suet probably isn't good for the arteries though...lol
ReplyDeleteEnjoy little birdies ...maybe I'l whip some up to!!

I may have to try this.
ReplyDeleteI guess the birds here in Hawaii really don't need any suet cakes just because there's always so much food around. :-)
ReplyDeletewhat a nice winter treat, sounds like you have happy birds where you live...enjoy the snow.
ReplyDeleteI must say the suet cakes look very yummy indeed...even if I am not a bird! I haven't had many birds this winter but have plenty of assorted woodpeckers. They do love the suet cakes.
