Fryeburg Fair

Yesterday we spent most of the day at Fryeburg Fair. This fair seems to be the agricultural fair in Maine, although when I was growing up, I thought Skowhegan State Fair was considered to be the fair. (My father showed cows, horses, and sheep at Skowhegan Fair, and my sister and I (4H members) put our baking and sewing projects on display for judging. It was always a thrill to get a blue or red ribbon and 50¢ or maybe even a whole dollar as a prize.)

Anyway, Ken feels no fall is complete without a day spent at Fryeburg Fair. He grew up in the Fryeburg area, so that's why his allegiance is with this particular fair.

When we arrived, dark clouds loomed over us, but after dropping only a few sprinkles, they gave way to a beautiful fall day.

We toured many of the barns, seeing alpacas, llamas, horses, cattle, sheep....you name it.

The midway didn't interest either of us that much, but when it was time for lunch, we gravitated to the food booths and pigged out on non-nutritional, cholesterol-laden, delicious treats.

My favorite exhibition hall was the Fiber Hall. I visited it twice, in fact: once to look then once to purchase.

I've never knit anything as fancy as these hats and probably never will. I do admire anyone who can manage several colors of yarn at once and create designs like this though. (My apology to the lady captured in the mirror. I didn't realize I was photographing anyone when I snapped the picture.)

This yarn looks luscious enough to gobble up.

Just as we were leaving Fryeburg Fair, about four hours after we'd arrived, I said to Ken, "Isn't it amazing that we haven't run into a single person we know? I mean, there are thousands of people here; you'd think we'd recognize someone."

No sooner did I say that than we did encounter an old friend.

  1. Your header photo is splendid! So cheerful. I haven't been to the Fryeburg Fair in years. I used to love funnel cakes...I remember my one and only roller-coaster ride was at the Skowhegan Fair at around the age of 10. I still remember the horror of it all :)

  3. I love your colorful fall header,too!

Looks like you had a great time at the fair. I can almost sell the kettle popcorn and feel the nip in the air.

  4. NC State Fair begins next week. We plan to take our granddaughters. I can tell you that it has been 30+ years since I have attended a fair(does that make me old or what). No state fairs in the islands. It should be a real treat.

    Beautiful header.
